Australian Open Betting Odds

(PRLEAP.COM) In the men’s singles tournament bookies are backing Roger Federer to take his third Australian Open title in a row and fourth Australian Open of his career. With William Hill pricing Federer at odds of 8/11, it seems as if he will once again be one of the safest bets available at the tournament.

With Federer strongly backed to lift the Norman Brookes Challenge Cup in Melbourne, focus shifts to his likely opponent in the final. An interesting scrap is developing in sportsbooks over which young tennis star is most likely to have an opportunity to knock Federer off his number one ranking.

Main rival Rafael Nadal has long been the logical choice for a final berth, but a loss in the final of the Chennai Open to Mikhail Youzhny in early January has led some to believe that the young Spaniard may be trumped by up-and coming Serb Novak Djokovic during the course of the Australian Open.

With Nadal priced at 8/1 to win the Australian Open and Djokovic’s prospects priced at 9/1, both players offer tempting betting opportunities at great odds. Trailing Nadal and Djokovic in the odds are David Nalbandian (12/1) and Andrew Murray (14/1), both of whom offer excellent odds for speculative bets.

The Ladies’ Singles betting markets are unanimous in voting Justine Henin as the short odds favourite, with the Belgian superstar priced at 6/4 by William Hill. Following Serena Williams surprise win at the 2007 edition of the Australian Open, bookmakers have made the decision to take the Williams sisters’ prospects seriously in 2008, and both are priced at single figures with Serena Williams priced at 5/1 and Venus Williams at 6/1.

With two times grand slam winner Maria Sharapova also priced in single figures at 8/1, it looks like punters face some tough choices when selecting this year’s ladies singles winner.

Whilst betting markets favour Justine Henin, seasoned punters will know that the balance of power in tennis can shift in a day and that several talented emerging Eastern European players are more than capable of causing at upset at the 2008 Australian Open tennis tournament. Amongst the most interesting prospects are Jelena Jankovic (25/1) and Svetlana Kuznetsova (14/1).
