Antique Maison LLC Brings "Home" Back to the Victims of Hurricane Katrina

(PRLEAP.COM) Bay St.Louis, MS - August 24, 2008 – Sylvia Young was a store owner with plans to retire only weeks away. She was selling her business, Bon Temps Roulé, a tuxedo, bridal, and costume shop. When hurricane Katrina hit in August of 2005, Young’s shop was flooded and wind-damaged. Her merchandise was completely destroyed. "My business was underwater," Young stated.

With insurance refusing to pay for the damages to shops much like Young’s, Sylvia took her retirement savings and put it towards her next business venture: Antique Maison LLC. Instead of tuxedo, bridal, and costume wear, Young now sold home décor, furniture, books, jewelry, tools, collectibles and art. Young opened up the antique mall to help her community to replace the items they lost in the hurricane.

Young manages this mall and sells the items for the dealers and artists, providing each with their own booth for their merchandise and work. "I am providing victims of hurricane Katrina a place to sell their merchandise and art," Young said.

With most homes and businesses completely destroyed, Sylvia wanted these antiques, vintage, and art pieces to make her customers feel like they had something to hold on to that brought good memories into their place of living as they rebuild. Sylvia says she opened Antique Maison "Because this is where I saw the need. Everyone had lost everything from their homes and businesses," commented Sylvia.

Sylvia knows that none of this would have been possible without the help of the many volunteers that have been there with her every step of the way. "I’m very thankful to the volunteers that came, and are still coming to our community."

Although retirement has definitely been pushed back for awhile now, Ed and Sylvia Young are doing well and keeping the spirits of their customers alive.

"I feel blessed that I have enough of a building still standing to renovate," said Sylvia.
